CORE MESSAGE

No matter who you are or where you live, most of us pitch in to help each other out. But billionaires and large corporations are getting richer and richer even in the midst of a pandemic while refusing to pay what they owe in taxes. They try to fool us into thinking there’s not enough funding to go around while they rig our tax code, flood our elections with dark money, and pocket record-breaking profits. We’re not falling for their lies. We know our work creates the wealth they take. When we come together, as we have in the past, we can build a fair tax code that funds the things our communities need like the child tax credit, good schools, affordable healthcare, paid family and medical leave, and housing.

POLLING + Fast Facts

CORPORATIONS AREN’T PAYING WHAT THEY OWE

55 of the largest corporations including Amazon, Delta, FedEx, GM and Netflix, contributed no federal taxes in 2020.

MILLIONS LOSE JOBS WHILE BILLIONAIRES GET RICHER

From mid March to May 2022, billionaires increased their wealth by 58 percent, or $1.7 trillion, while 36 million people lost their jobs and applied for unemployment in the pandemic.

THE CHILD TAX CREDIT LIFTED KIDS OUT OF POVERTY

Expanding the Child Tax Credit decreased child poverty rates by 45% and lifted 6.7 million people out of poverty in one year, including nearly 4 million children. The CTC worked and we can do it again.

PUBLIC INVESTMENTS, NOT TAX CUTS, MAKE COMMUNITIES STRONGER

Cuts to public services cost our economy more than they save the government, especially in hard times. For example, every $1 investment in the SNAP program grows our economy by $1.54, according to the USDA. Cutting public investment and restraining aid during economic crises is especially irresponsible — and has been shown to lengthen and deepen recessions

THE ULTRA WEALTHY HAVE STOLEN TRILLIONS FROM THE REST OF US

Corporations have posted record profits since the 70s, but working people’s wages have decreased over that same time period, resulting in extreme income inequality. One study found that over the past four decades, that’s resulted in more than $50 trillion siphoned from the paychecks of working families. Just since COVID-19 began, America’s billionaires have increased their wealth by 70% - and many of them will never pay taxes on those gains.

Words that Work

Use “fund our communities” over economic terms like “invest” or “afford.” We don't fund our communities in order to turn a profit, we do so to improve life for everyone. Money language puts people in a scarcity mindset - which only helps our opposition!

Every American, no matter where we come from or what our color, deserves a shot at a better life so we can stop living paycheck to paycheck.

Budgets are a reflection of our values––we should fund the things our communities need

Now is not the time to shy away from fully funding the future our families need

To truly recover, we must fund the things that build our communities like healthcare, education, and housing.

We can fund what our communities really need like schools, healthcare, retirement and infrastructure.

We should close corporate tax loopholes, so everyone pays their fair share.

It’s not about choosing between our much-needed priorities, it’s about creating real growth and making the pie bigger so that there is enough to go around for all.

We need to spend on the things that make our communities stronger, safer, and better

When we all pull together, we can ensure our shared prosperity

We need to create an economy that works for all of us. That begins by having the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

Decades of cuts to healthcare, education, and housing have harmed Black, brown, and poor communities

The wealthy few take resources from our communities, undermining our schools and healthcare, so that they can catch a free ride off what working families contribute.

We need to ensure our schools and communities have the resources they need so that our kids can get a good education.
